Manto

MantoManto - Manto, 46 Canal Street, Manchester, M1 3WD map

  • Manto has been situated in the village since the very beginning and it was instrumental in helping create the village we know and love today.Manto is also home to The infamous Breakfast Club, started way back in 1993. A big bar (Manto is spread over three floors), can often feel hollow and one can become a number in the crowd, not so here, everyone is very friendly and they want you to be happy, relaxed and carefree. A bar by day and a club by night, manto is run by gay people for gay people, although if you’re not gay but just a little bit happy then you’re more than welcome.

Mark Addy

January 10, 2007Filled under: Bar Reviews - M - manchesterbars 7:20 pm

Mark AddyMark Addy- Stanley Street, Salford, M3 5EJ map

  • just a short walk down Bridge Street, off deansgate, and across the bridge (which officially takes you into Salford), you’ll find the great riverside basement bar which is the Mark Addy. Named after the publican who saved many people from drowning in the river that separates the cities of Manchester and Salford, it’s most noted for the excellent food.  The menu is mainly traditional and British, but it’s the massive selection of cheese and pate that make the local office workers, barristers and lawyers flock here for lunch.  The portions are so generous they should last for at least 2 pints!  Talking of beer, there are some real ales on offer as well as the usual choice beers wines and spirits.  You can choose to drink in the long, low-ceiling bar or outside on the balcony with it’s riverside view.
  • food (British plus many pates/cheeses from around the world)
  • real ale
  • river views

Mojo

January 8, 2007Filled under: Bar Reviews - M - manchesterbars 10:53 am

MojoMojo - 19 Back Bridge St, Manchester, M3 2PB  map

  • Mojo, a dark loft bar above the Starbucks behind Kendals, is a popular hidden gem.  Serving great cocktails and playing classic rock music from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and today, the walls are packed with posters and black and white prints of rock icons, with a fair share of Mancunian stars amongst them.  Another concept imported from Leeds, Mojo also have a branch in the Bahamas and can best be described as a superior British take on the Hard Rock Cafe formula (minus the food, crap American perm metal and the memoribilia from bands that never really meant anything to Manchester anyway).  There’s a large cocktail menu, with prices amongst the cheapest in town and the quality amongst the best.  And where else in Manchester will you hear Neil Young followed by Gill Scott Heron, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin or Creedence Clearwater Revival!?!  Located in what was once Lloyds Bar, Bench and Tapas Tapas, just off Bridge Street, near the Crown Court, it’s a hard to find bar that always looks closed from the outside.  The entrance is tucked down the dirty backstreet behind the fantastic Koreana restaurant and the delightful Mulligans Irish pub. It’s one well worth seeking out and it’s obvious many people do as it especially gets busy at weekends.  As they claim themselves, they’re playing ‘Music For The People’.

  • Import beers
  • Music (classic rock)

Manchester Bier Keller

Bier KellerBier Keller - Manchester Bier Keller, 77 Piccadilly, Manchester, M1 2BU map

  • One of the few places in manchester that encourages you to stand on your chairs, manchester bier Keller (or ‘The Beer Keller’ as the sign outside says) is a great place for parties and large groups. Part of a small chain of clubs offering traditional style Oompah nights, the music is stereotypically German and the beer comes in very, very large pots - 2 litre Steins to be precise. Bier Keller now also offer gig nights on selected fridays and the venue is sometimes used in the day for pole dancing lessons!
  • Oompah brass band music
  • Live Music (indie, rock & electronica)
  • Nightclub (cheesy pop & party music)

Monroes Hotel and BarMonroes Hotel and Bar - 38 London Road, Manchester, M1 1PE map

  • A friendly traditional b&b pub, Monroe’s has a individual feel, which is mainly due to its Marilyn Monroe theme. The bar has a good range of drinks and some real ales, there is also food available in the restaurant area.  Monroe’s is also a gay friendly place and is popular with revellers from the nearby legends.  The hotel is basic although popular with travellers to Piccadilly Station across the road.
