Retro Bar- 78 Sackville Street, Manchester, M1 3NJ map

• Very friendly boozer close to University campuses and student accommodation, which can only add up to one thing, this place is really popular with students. However having said this it does have a mixture of people coming through the doors. Upstairs is your typical boozer, digital jukebox, tv’s, fruit machines and pool table should keep all amused. While downstairs is the Retro Bar’s hidden gem, hosting live band nights and club nights throughout the week. There is a small entry fee for downstairs and it can get busy very quickly. This is also a popular starting point for people venturing off to 5th Avenue.

• From the same group as The Living Room and Est, Est, Est, the Restaurant Bar and Grill has remained one of the most popular establishments in Manchester over many years.  One of the first bar/grill style venues hitting manchester it has always attracted a more upmarket clientele, those looking for quality rather than to pose.  The long bar upstairs is a great place to meet friends and have a drink, and the downstairs venue occassionally boasts dj’s. The food on offer is amongst the best in town, yet reasonably priced, offering modern European and British dishes.  You’ll need to book ahead though as more often than not, this place is understandably full.

• Situated in Rocco Forte’s exclusive Lowry Hotel, the River Bar along with the very long terrace offer excellent views over the river irwell. Being a 5 star hotel bar you can expect excellent service, a great range of drinks and some super cocktails. one of the only places in Manchester (or Salford to be precise, as its on the opposite side of the Irwell), to still offer a full traditional afternoon tea (with champagne of course). The River Bar and Terrace also offer a lite lunch menu, however if you would prefer something a little more substantial then the traditional British and Fusion specialities of the River Restaurant are ideal. There is entertainment and live music most evenings and on occasional sunday afternoons.

• sitting on the corner of the printworks complex, cafe rouge is brought to us by the same people that own the bella italia chain. The food is traditional, simple and french and of good quality, the drinks are reasonable too and there is a good wine menu on offer. During the day the atmosphere reflects a Parissean cafe bar, especially in the summer when the outside seating is very popular.  As the emphasis is on eating rather than drinking it is better suited for those wanting a quiet drink and chat around a table.

A uk chain of bar restaurants, cafe rouge is brought to us by the same people that own bella italia, just a few doors down on Deansagte. The food is traditional, simple and french and of good quality, the drinks are reasonable too and there is a good wine menu on offer.  With the empashis more on the restaurant, the atmosphere is more suited to a quiet sophisticated Parisian cafe bar if it’s just a drink your after.   With great outside seating though, it’s a brilliant place to sit, sip and watch the world go by.

Rodeo - High Street, Manchester, M4 1BD map

• If you don’t know where Rodeo is, just look for the very Bright Mural on the side of the building, the doors just round the corner and if you see a seat free, then bag it as it can get very busy inside here very quickly. The bar area is only small, the bar itself takes up a fair proportion of the room, and is graced with some fine spirits. With a south american and spanish feel, rodeo is just that little bit different without falling foul of the tacky theme. The music is cool, and the company is very good, with cheapish drinks to boot, its got to be worth a visit.
