• The English Lounge is an attempt at bringing a london ‘old boys’ or gentleman club into the heart of manchester, the hard wood and leather furniture are typical of this style and there are plenty of books on the shelves. The English Lounge offers a massive range of traditional and cask ales, they claim ‘the biggest choice in Manchester’, as well as a reasonably priced wine menu along with a traditional british menu with some added surprises.  Don’t make the mistake of walking by this place if you previously unimpressed by the Hog’s Head or Wheatsheaf, which previously sat here - The English Lounge is a massive improvement and well worth a visit.

Edwards - Westminster House, Portland Street, Manchester, M1 3HU map

• A popular chain bar just round the corner from piccadilly gardens, edwards is frequented by office workers, shoppers and students.  This bar was one of the first of the stylish new look bars opened in manchester with queues outside once a common sight.  Things have relaxed a little since then and if you want a friendly place to drink where you can eat and dance as well then this is a great venue.  The food served is typical pub/bar in style but it is great value, add that to the special drinks promotions and you might find you spend a little longer in edwards than first intended. Music wise, there is a real mix of styles which may be a little loud at times. Edwards also shows all the top sporting events on the numerous flat pannelled tv screens.

Essential - Essential, 8 Minshull Street, Manchester, M1 3EF map

• Essential is the biggest gay club in Manchester and once you step inside you’d be forgiven for thinking that you just stepped on the set of friends, perhaps it is the ‘friendly’ décor that adds to the great atmosphere. The door policy is notoriously strict, and whilst they state they mainly admit only gay and lesbian customers, they will allow some straight gay-respecting people. In reality, it’s not uncommon to hear gay people complaining of being turned away because the bouncers found them to be too hetrosexual looking. Essential operates a very good ‘passout’ system which means you can come and go as you please, within reason. As you’d expect for a club from Take That supremo, Nigel Martin Smith, every night is an event here, non more so than at the weekend when the regular club nights take hold.

Eden Bar - 3 Brazil Street, Manchester, M1 3PJ map

• Eden Bar is a straight friendly gay bar and restaurant in the gay Village offering light snacks and heartier meals during the day. Formerly Metz, you have to cross a bridge over the canal to get to it.  Relax in their lounge bar, like the characters in Cold Feet were often filmed doing, or on the famous floating barge outside on the canal.  DJ’s play a selection of cheesy pop, camp disco and classic club tunes at weekends and drink prices are amongst the cheapest on Canal Street.
