The Bay horse

The Bay HorseThe Bay Horse - 35-37 Thomas Street, Manchester, M4 1NA map

  • the interior of the bay horse is completely different to what you would expect from the exterior. For a start, it only looks small from the outside, yet inside there are two very large bar areas. Then, you might be thinking you were going to be stepping into an older worldy pub, but no, the interior is classy and modern. There is a great selection of wine and spirits behind the bar, and some good draught and bottled beers also and if you are peckish, they do have a few bar snacks on offer. If its full upstairs, then head down the staircase to a darker basement and enjoy ample seating and a good game of pool.

Rodeo

RodeoRodeo - High Street, Manchester, M4 1BD map

  • If you don’t know where Rodeo is, just look for the very Bright Mural on the side of the building, the doors just round the corner and if you see a seat free, then bag it as it can get very busy inside here very quickly. The bar area is only small, the bar itself takes up a fair proportion of the room, and is graced with some fine spirits. With a south american and spanish feel, rodeo is just that little bit different without falling foul of the tacky theme. The music is cool, and the company is very good, with cheapish drinks to boot, its got to be worth a visit.

Chaophraya

  • Without any doubt, chaophraya is a place to make you happy. From the moment you step foot in the door, you are made to feel special by one of the many superb waiters and waitresses with a traditional Thai greeting.   Although the upstairs restaurant is quickly earning the reputation as being the best in town, we’ll concentrate on the bar here. Firstly, lets talk about seating.  You can choose from luxurious leather sofa’s, high cocktail stools or the traditional Thai sunken seating; very traditional, very, very comfortable, and very, very, very tricky to get out of after you’ve tasted the delights of the bar.  There’s wonderful Thai cocktails on offer as well as the usual classics, a fantastic wine selection and some great Asian beers.  And whilst you soak up the ambience, expect another friendly waitress in traditional dress to provide you with a complimentary tray of snacks.  In short (it’s hard to be with this place), the decor is amazing, the music is subtle, the drinks fantastic and the service second to none.  Then of course, if you choose to venture upstairs, there’s the restaurant - not only amongst the best in Manchester, but arguably amongst the best in Britain!  Wow!

Seven Oaks

December 18, 2006Filled under: Bar Reviews - S - manchesterbars 4:48 am

Seven OaksSeven Oaks - Seven Oaks, 5 Nicholas Street, Manchester, M1 4HL map

  • One of manchesters small traditional pubs, the seven oaks is right in the heart of china town. The cream tiled exteria stands out in this back street, the interior is everything you would expect as well. This is a beer pub and as well as their regular draughts of boddies and tetley they have the occasional guest ale. Popular with the office workers from the nearby Mosley Steet, there is a welcoming atmosphere in here and the regulars are a friendly bunch.  If it gets too crowded in the small downstairs bar, then you may find room upstairs in their function room.

The BankThe Bank -  54 Mosley Street, Manchester, M2 3HQ map

  • Having recently been refurbished, The Bank is a grand bar, very popular with the office workers from the many banks and building societies alongside it on Mosley Street. There’s a good choice of beers on offer and some great guest ales.  Food wise, there’s a traditional british menu, offering a great choice of pub grub.

Lammars

Filled under: Bar Reviews - L - manchesterbars 4:15 am

LammarsLammars - Fourways House, Hilton Street, Manchester, M1 2EF map

  • Nestled in the back streets between the Northern Quarter and Piccadilly Station, Lammars is a deceptively large lounge bar and restaurant, well worth visiting. Boasting lush decor that some might see as being a little camp, that should come as no surprise really as Lammars is named after Manchester’s favourite drag queen, Frank Foo Foo Lammar, who tragically lost his battle against cancer in 2003. (Frank’s own Foo Foo’s Palace was also located at the end of the road opposite). The bar offers a reasonable range of draught and bottle beers and spirits, whilst there are a few good wines available and cocktails too. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed and it really is the ideal place to eat and drink.

Cuba Cafe

Filled under: Bar Reviews - C - manchesterbars 3:30 am

Cuba Cafe Cuba Cafe - 43 Port Street, Manchester, M1 2EQ map

  • Hidden behind piccadilly in the northern quarter is a great little club that is targeted at the more mature party crowd, and when you step inside Cuba Cafe you would be forgiven for believing that you had really travelled to castro’s country. Offering a number of salsa classes through the week, it’s the weekend when Cuba Cafe really comes into its own. The over 25 policy is a welcome one and it means that you can really enjoy cool tunes spun by the resident dj along with the ecclectic surroundings. The bar is well stocked as well with some great spirits and cocktails and some great bar promotions.

The Piccadilly

Filled under: Bar Reviews - P - manchesterbars 3:08 am

The PiccadillyThe Piccadilly - 60-75 Piccadilly, Manchester, M1 2BS map

  • A haunt for Manchester city supporters, the Piccadilly offers a number of cask ales along with the usual beers, lager and cider. Almost an exact replica of the Wetherspoons a few doors down (which is popular with United supporters), it was previously called The Piccadilly Tavern and at one time, The Goose.  There is a typical bar menu and the food is basic yet reasonably priced.

The Brunswick

Filled under: Bar Reviews - B - manchesterbars 2:55 am

The BrunswickThe Brunswick - The Brunswick, 97 Piccadilly, Manchester, M1 2DB map

  • The brunswick is a psuedo traditional pub just a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Station.  It was once a traditional pub (also called The Brunswick) before changing it’s name and appearance to Finnegan’s Wake, eventually reverting back to its original name.  Confusingly, it is also branded as the trendier sounding ‘b lounge’ which along with it’s sister bar B Lounge @ The Bridge is creating a new style of venue.  It has the usual range of drinks behind the bar and a couple of cask ales on offer and all are reasonably priced. The food is general standard pub grub, so if it’s a beer and a bar snack you require on your way to the station next door, then this is the place for you. There’s a large tv in the bar and the pub does get busy on match days. Also newly introduced are the live jazz nights held on a wednesday and the friday and saturday DJ spots.

The Waldorf

The WaldorfThe Waldorf - The Waldorf, 12 Gore Street, Manchester, M1 3AQ map

  • Another of Manchester’s traditional pubs, the Waldorf is very popular during the daytime and early evening with the local office workers. There is also a large screen tv showing the football so on match days it gets overcrowded. The interior is all oak pannelled and the range of beers is good. Also available here is a food menu which includes the usual pub meals and bar snacks.
