  • The sophisticated Michael Caines Champagne and Cocktail Bar at the Abode Hotel, located on the lower level adjacent to the Michael Caines Restaurant, is destined to become one of Manchester’s coolest meeting venues, a destination bar for any time of day or night.  With one of the best champagne menu’s in town, great cocktails, a superb wine list, beers and a fantastic ‘grazing menu’ offering miniature versions of the dishes available at the adjacent fine-dining restaurant from the double Michelin star winning chef.

My fiancee and I came in last Saturday going to San Carlo for dinner after finding the MC restaurant fully booked. After reading the review in City Life magazine we had high expectations but were delighted to find them both met and exceeded throughout the evening!

We snuck in the side entrance to the bar off Picadilly and were met on arrival by a well presented, polished young man who invited us through into ‘his’ comfortable lounge, took our coats and made us feel more like were guests in his home with a real sincere and old fashioned service even though the bar and restaurant appeared extremely busy.

We were presented with the drinks lists, and informed of the signature special cocktails, which were Indigo Rain and Spiced Pear Sling. Our order was taken minutes later by the same young man who demonstrated his extensive knowledge of the drinks list when asked about the Indigo Rain cocktail which my fiancee went for, i went with my favourite, an Old Fashioned. Our drinks arrived in a timely manner and beautifully presented in a way i was more accustomed to seeing in my favourite London lounge bars, the final touch, a liquer drizzled over my partners cocktail actually at the table!

Both our drinks tasted as good as they looked and being a discerning old fashioned lover I was suprised at perfect balance of sweetness and the complexity of the drink as a whole. On leaving for dinner we were politely invted to return (which we shall be doing as soon as we can) and talked through the tapas style “Grazing” bar menu concept should we ever find the restaurant fully booked again.

The only downside was the 11% fixed service charge added to the drinks bill. The service was outstanding but we would have preffered to leave a cash tip at our discrestion rather than having to pay service.
